ICC Awards nominations unveiled

Shivnarine Chanderpaul of the West Indies, Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene and South Africa's Dale Steyn have been nominated for both the Cricketer of the Year and Test Player of the Year categories for the ICC Awards 2008. While South Africa captain Graeme Smith is the fourth nominee for the Cricketer of the Year, Jacques Kallis completes the list for the Test Player of the Year.

India's one-day and Twenty20 International captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has also picked up nominations in two categories. Apart from being shortlisted for The ODI Player of the Year, his captaincy while leading India to victory in the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa last September has earned him a nomination for the Twenty20 International Performance of the Year.

The fifth edition of the awards to be held in Dubai on Wednesday, will be presented in association with FICA and will take into account performances by players and officials in the period between August 9, 2007 and August 12, 2008.

Apart from Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, nominated for the ODI Player of the Year, Ishant Sharma (Emerging Player of the Year) and Yuvraj Singh (Twenty20 International Performance of the Year) will be making up the Indian representation at this year's awards.

While Ishant will be up against Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis, England all-rounder Stuart Broad and South African fast bowler Morne Morkel in the Emerging Player of The Year category, Dhoni and Yuvraj will face competition from Chris Gayle of the West Indies and Australia's Brett Lee for the Twenty20 International Performance of the Year.

Lee is one of the three Australian players who have picked up nominations this year along with Nathan Bracken (ODI Player of the Year) and Lisa Sthalekar (Women's Cricketer of the Year).

Sthalekar will be competing alongside Claire Taylor of England, New Zealand's Nicola Browne and England captain Charlotte Edwards for the Women's Cricketer of the Year award.

Meanwhile, Thomas Odoyo of Kenya will be looking to win the Associate Player of the Year award for the second time, but will have to thwart challenges from team-mate Alex Obanda, Ryan ten Doeschate of the Netherlands and Ireland's Niall O'Brien.

Simon Taufel will be also be eyeing his fifth successive Umpire of the Year award after being nominated alongside Mark Benson, Aleem Dar, Steve Davis and Rudi Koertzen.

The nominations for six of the awards were made by a five-man ICC selection panel chaired by former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd and comprising Greg Chappell, Shaun Pollock, Sidath Wettimuny and Athar Ali Khan. The panel will also select the ICC Test and ODI teams of the year.

The winners of the six individual awards will be voted upon by a 25-person panel from around the world, made up of renowned former players, respected members of the media, an umpire and match referee from the Elite panel.

Meanwhile, the nominations for the Women's Cricketer of the Year Award were decided after each of the world's top 10 teams was given the opportunity to nominate two players. The award will be voted on by a separate 16-person voting academy featuring former players and other experts on the women's game.

While the Spirit of Cricket Award will be voted on by all the international captains as well as all members of the Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees, the Umpire of the Year Award will be voted on by the captains and the match referees.

With every producer and director of fame running to remake old classics, it came as no surprise when director Rajeev Menon said that he intended to remake Abhimaan, the 1973, Amitabh Bachchan-Jaya Bhaduri starrer, which was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The film's producer, Pawan Kumar, is however, not having any of this.He has claimed that he has the copyright of the film and is the owner of the film. Kumar himself has intentions of remaking the Seventies classic, with the Senior Bachchans playing the parents and the junior Bachchans, Abhishek andAishwarya Rai playing the lead roles.But Kumar dismisses that as mere talk and says that nothing has been finalised yet. It is believed that that the Big B asked him to find a director who could do full justice to the Hrishikesh Mukherjee classic. But with nothing has yet been finalised.Kumar promises to make an announcement in a little while. He plans to retain some of the old songs to keep the flavour of the film alive.The original's music was composed by the late SD Burman. Its songs still have a lot of appeal.Apparently, besides Menon evenRakesh Mehra wanted to remake the film with AR Rahman composing the music.

EAMCET 2008 notification for web counselling

Citing certain ‘technical difficulties’, the AP State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) has changed the dates of web-based counselling for admission into engineering courses from August 22-31 to August 24 - September 4.

A decision to this effect has been taken here on thursday after a highlevel conference held at the APSCHE.

"Candidates can exercise up to 200 options and change their options ten times. The final allotment letter can be downloaded from the websites www.eamcet.dte.gov.in or www.eamcet.apsche.ac.in from September 6," camp officer Raghunath Reddy said.

Candidates who have not taken the scratch cards in the first phase of counselling can obtain them from the nearest counselling center from August 26 onwards.

He also urged the students not to panic as the web-based counselling is not based on ‘first come; first serve’ policy.

Similarly, the final phase counselling that was earlier scheduled from September 2 - 24 has also been changed to September 8 - 30. So far 64,894 candidates have taken admission into engineering courses.

The Council has also allotted additional intake of 6,000 seats and gave permission to 24 engineering colleges making the final tally of colleges to 521. This means that there would be around 55,958 vacant seats for the final phase of counselling.

The counselling for admission into biotechnology and pharmacy courses under the BiPC stream would be held from September 1 - 6 (except on Sep 3). The classes would commence by the first week of October.

REVIEW OF R G V 'S LATEST VENTURE "SARKAR RAJ"

The Bachchan family in...

With Sarkar, Ram Gopal Varma had precisely established the central characters, set the ambience, defined the aura and demarcated the genre. So in the follow-up he simply had to take the legend ahead while narrating a new episode. And to a decent degree he succeeds in carrying the legacy forward. In the second installment, Sarkar aka Subhash Nagre (Amitabh Bachchan) takes a backseat as son Shankar Nagre (Abhishek Bachchan) takes hold of the family empire. An NRI industrialist Anita Ranjan (Aishwarya Rai) approaches the Nagre family with a power plant project to be set in the local lands of Maharashtra under Sarkar’s domain. After initial reluctance, Sarkar gives a go ahead to the venture which soon takes shape of a political conspiracy. Ramu’s storytelling pattern is such that he initially builds up the drama and subsequently breaks down the politics behind the play. He effectively employs all the original techniques from the predecessor by making use of the same theme for the background score (Amar Mohile), caustic editing pattern (Amit Parmar, Nipun Gupta), sepia tone effect and erratic camera angles (Amit Roy). But while adhering to the original, he occasionally, also sets up repetitiveness in the screenplay with similar setup and shot execution. For instance he sketches a group of negative forces absolutely analogous like the villain quartet from Sarkar with identical intentions to crumple the Nagre kingdom. Reprehensibly their caricature characterizations do not gel with the solemn temper of the film. Sayaji Shinde hams endlessly while Govind Namdeo and Upendra Limaye are consistently theatrical, appearing more as comic sidekicks. To an extent, even the screenplay is moulded in the vein of the forerunner film when Shankar wages a political war against his opponents. But the treatment is twisted as Ramu reverses the roleplay of the father-son duo in this film in clear contrast to the format adopted in the earlier episode. While the father takes a backseat in the initial reels giving authority to son, he grabs charge of the proceedings in the concluding portions. Like in Sarkar, Ramu sharply balances the role runtime of both the father and the son justifying the collective presence of Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. But he simultaneously swaps their zones of prominence thereby bringing a variation in their contribution. Despite drama being the highlight, the texture is subtle throughout. From a political war, the film intermittently shifts track to a regular revenge drama till it arrives to a volatile climax that forms a highlight of the enterprise, escalating the entire graph. Sarkar Raj clearly gains major marks for its clever culmination, which was so much lacking from recent RGV products. The considerately and crisply penned dialogues by Prashant Pandey add a lot of insight to the scenes and depth to the characterizations. From the cast, Aishwarya Rai plays a mere spectator to the scenes than a participant to the politics. She is her usual self and her act doesn’t seem to be sculpted by the RGV touch. The other two Bachchans have exhaustive scope and completely submit to Ramu’s visualization. Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan, once again, employ the intensity of their piercing eyes to give sight to Ram Gopal Varma’s distinctive vision.

Aishwarya Rai: I never focus on my wardrobe!

Why do Aishwarya, Cannes and controversy always go together?

That is precisely the question Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai asks herself!

"I understands the constant need for people to check out my clothes and accessories at important events, but I can't fathom is why my clothes become more important than me at the Cannes Film Festival?" says the actor.

"I don't even want to think about what people thought of my clothes earlier, and what they think of it now!

To me how I conduct myself at Cannes and how people react to me are far more important than what I wear," says Aishwarya, who has been attending the prestigious film fest since 2002.

The first time she went to Cannes, was for her Bollywood extravaganza Devdas being released there. The experience still lingers on Ash's mind.

"It wasn't just about how much they liked me in a sari or walking the red carpet! It was more memorable for the standing ovation that we got after the screening of 'Devdas'. What an ovation! It was a very special experience," reminisces the beauty.
